Pulmonary Hypertension

Pulmonary hypertension is a serious condition characterized by persistently elevated blood pressure in the pulmonary vessels. This leads to increasing strain on the right side of the heart and, if left untreated, can progress to heart failure. Patients often experience shortness of breath, fatigue, and reduced physical capacity—frequently long before a clear diagnosis is made. The disease may systemic conditions. Due to its non-specific symptoms and complex causes, pulmonary hypertension is often diagnosed late, which complicates treatment and negatively affects disease progression.

Research in Pulmonary Hypertension

Within the BREATH research network, scientists investigate the molecular, cellular, and vascular mechanisms that contribute to the development and progression of pulmonary hypertension—from childhood through adulthood. Close collaboration between pediatric and adult pulmonology enables a comprehensive analysis of disease trajectories across the entire lifespan. A key focus lies on vascular remodeling processes, impaired vascular regulation, and inflammatory responses. In addition, researchers study how specific clinical situations—such as pregnancy in patients with pulmonary hypertension—affect risk, disease course, and treatment.

Another important focus of BREATH research is the identification of biomarkers to enable earlier diagnosis and more accurate prognosis. Hannover participates in the international COMPERA registry, which systematically collects clinical data from patients with pulmonary hypertension and makes it available for scientific analysis. Clinical and translational studies evaluate new pharmacological treatment approaches as well as strategies for personalized therapy. The overall aim is to deepen the understanding of the disease and to sustainably improve care for patients with pulmonary hypertension.
