Welcome to breath

BREATH (“Biomedical Research in Endstage and Obstructive Lung Disease Hannover”) is the Hannover site of the German Center for Lung Research.

about breath

BREATH is a multidisciplinary research network for translational lung research. It brings together clinicians, researchers, engineers and technology experts to help turn scientific discoveries more rapidly into new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for patients.

BREATH is jointly supported by Hannover Medical School, Fraunhofer ITEM, Leibniz University Hannover and the CAPNEZT FOUNDATION. The network combines outstanding clinical expertise with internationally visible research in medicine, biology, data science and therapy development.

One of BREATH’s particular strengths is the close integration of adult and pediatric pulmonology, thoracic surgery and one of the world’s largest lung transplantation programs for both children and adults. This clinical expertise is complemented by excellent basic research, specialized research infrastructures and broad capabilities in artificial intelligence and computational sciences.

Voluntary year in science (FWJ)

If you are interested in pursuing a scientific degree in the life sciences after completing secondary school, especially in the field of lung research, you can gain your first hands-on research experience at Hannover Medical School through a Voluntary Scientific Year. Several BREATH research groups also offer placements within this programme.

MHH Voluntary Scientific Year Programme
Graduate School HBRS

If you are interested in pursuing a PhD in the life sciences, Hannover Biomedical Research School (HBRS) at Hannover Medical School offers structured doctoral training in an international research environment. Several BREATH research groups are involved in HBRS programmes, providing opportunities to work on cutting-edge topics in lung biology, infection research, immunology, and translational medicine.

For patients

The perspectives of patients and their families are of central importance to the work of the BREATH research network. Through information and dialogue, we aim to incorporate their concerns into our research. To this end, we refer to the Lungeninformationsdienst and invite patients and their families to engage in exchange at dedicated events.

Lung Information Service

The Lung Information Service (LID) is a service provided by the German Center for Lung Research. It offers reliable, scientifically sound information on lung diseases in a clear and accessible format, in German language. The aim is to support patients, their families, and interested individuals with competent, independent, and well-founded information.

Visit LID

Clinical Trials

Clinical trials on a range of lung diseases are currently being conducted at the study centres of the German Center for Lung Research (DZL). An overview of ongoing studies, organised by disease area, is available on the Lung Information Service website.

Events for patients

We warmly invite patients and their families to our patient events. Physicians from the BREATH research network provide clear and accessible information on various lung diseases, present the latest findings from clinical practice and research, and take time to answer questions and engage in personal exchange. Patient events are generally held in German language.
