Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive disorder of the airways characterized by persistent narrowing of the bronchi and reduced lung function. Typical symptoms include shortness of breath, chronic cough, and sputum production, which worsen over time. The primary cause is long-term inhalation of harmful particles or gases, particularly tobacco smoke, but also air pollution or occupational exposures. COPD is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide and represents a major challenge for healthcare systems. Despite available therapies, the disease remains incurable, and many patients experience acute exacerbations and a significantly reduced quality of life.

Research in COPD

Within the BREATH research network, scientists investigate the complex biological mechanisms that contribute to the development and progression of COPD. Research focuses include chronic inflammatory processes, structural changes in lung tissue, and impairments in the lung’s capacity for repair and regeneration. Another key area of study is the role of environmental factors, infections, and comorbidities that can significantly influence disease progression.

In addition, BREATH researchers analyze different COPD phenotypes to better understand the pronounced heterogeneity of the disease. The goal is to identify biomarkers that enable earlier diagnosis and more personalized treatment strategies. Clinical and translational studies evaluate new pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies, as well as approaches to prevent exacerbations. Through the close integration of basic research, clinical research, and health services research, BREATH makes an important contribution to advancing COPD research and improving long-term care for patients.
