Pneumonia & Acute Lung Injury (PALI)
Pneumonia and acute lung injury—also known as Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)—are among the most severe acute lung conditions. Pneumonia is an inflammation of lung tissue typically caused by bacteria, viruses, or other pathogens and is one of the most common infectious diseases worldwide. In severe cases, it can progress to acute lung failure, where an excessive inflammatory response damages the lungs to such an extent that gas exchange is no longer sufficient. Affected patients often require intensive care treatment and mechanical ventilation. Despite modern therapeutic options, pneumonia and ARDS are still associated with high mortality and long-term health impairments.
Research in Pneumonia & Acute Lung Injury (PALI)
Within the BREATH research network, scientists investigate the mechanisms that determine the onset, progression, and severity of these acute lung diseases. Key areas of research include the interaction between pathogens and the immune system, dysfunction of the alveolar barrier, vascular changes, and systemic inflammatory responses. Particular attention is given to understanding why disease courses vary widely between patients and which factors promote the transition from a localized infection to severe lung failure.
A central component of clinical research is participation in the BonHanZa study group, which conducts multicenter studies on severe respiratory infections and acute lung failure. The aim of BREATH research is to identify biomarkers for early risk stratification, develop new diagnostic approaches, and evaluate innovative therapies. By closely integrating experimental research, intensive care medicine, and clinical studies, BREATH contributes to sustainably improving the prognosis of patients with severe acute lung diseases.
