Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is one of the most common and deadliest cancers worldwide. It arises from the uncontrolled growth of cells in the lung and is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. The primary cause is smoking, but environmental factors, occupational exposures, and genetic influences also play a role. The disease is highly heterogeneous and includes different tumor types with distinct biological characteristics. Despite major advances in diagnostics and therapy, lung cancer remains a key medical and societal challenge.
Research in Lung Cancer
At BREATH, researchers investigate the biological foundations of tumor development and progression in the lung. A central focus lies on molecular alterations in tumor cells as well as on the interaction between tumors, lung tissue, and the immune system. In addition, mechanisms of therapy resistance are studied to better understand why certain treatments are not effective in individual patients.
An important contribution from BREATH researchers has been their involvement in the Hanse study, the results of which provided a key foundation for the introduction of lung cancer screening in Germany.
